since im dead bored, im gonna talk a bit about my fav movie, as the title of the post suggests, Gladiator. I think im just a sucker for movies with grand lines that give superb emotional impact(backed with a highly dramatic music score of course..)
Now im not gonna giv a synopsis or anything, u can find reviews everywhere on the net. The reason i want to blog about this is because of some of the lines in the movie..and oh, did you know emperor Marcus Aurelius(not sure of spelling) and his son Commodus(played by joachim phoenix) were real people? So was Commodus's sister but the story is purely fictional la.
one of my favourite lines from the movie..
Maximus: what we do in life, echoes in eternity.
when i first heard it, i was like wow..the script writers must be like really dramatic man..what we do in life echoes in eternity..i cant help but wonder 2000 years from now would people hav records of joshua nuing?Hahahaha!! * Ancient Malaysian database search complete: match found 1: joshua nuing: last known add: Lot 1xxx, berembang x, pujutxx, Miri, Sarawak:Description: Jobless bum due to retrenching following the catastrophic asian economic collapse of 2027. Harboured ill feelings to all forms of government which he blamed for all his troubles. Arrested for attempted assasination of Pujut legislative assemblyman during a political rally. *transcript ends**
HAHA! imagine that..
And heres another one..when Maximus was ordered to unmask himself..
Emperor Commodus:Slave!(this is a very cilaka way to call sumone) You will remove your
helmet and tell me your name.
Maximus, after unmasking himself gives the emperor a very 'tu lan' look.(the effect of this scene is multiplied by grand hollywood music) ..not to mention the constipated look on commodus's face upon realising that maximus was not dead.
Maximus:My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander ofthe armies of the north...general of the Felix Legions.. loyal servant to the true emperor,Marcus Aurelius... father to a murdered son... husband to a murdered wife..and I will have my vengeance in this life or the next.
Now i honestly felt this was a powerfull line, considering the emperor had ordered the rape and cruxifiction of Maximus's wife and child..wish i had the chance to say something like that.
For instance:
Ah beng 1: Ka NI Ne la! u better pay coz u accident my car..tiaw ni la! Im always right
u always wrong ma..tamade, u better tell me ur name and ic number ah
if u run i later call d pulis come tiaw you ah! cibai ah! wo tu lan liaw..
i turn around slowly, take of my specs and give him the 'maximus' look..
Joshua : My name is Joshua Bakir anak Nuing, assistant class monitor in form 1, Assistant
treasurer of the prefect board 2004/2005. Loyal servant to the true God, jesus
christ. father to a damaged car, Husband to an imaginary wife( jessica alba)..and
I will have my veangence in this life or the next!!!!
Ah beng 1: aiya, wo bu ming pai lah! can u please speaking simpler english??
now, i know that seems a bit far fetched but a funny tought none the less..oh ya!for added dramatic effect, id take out my handphone and play a the gladiator soundtrack while arguing.
towards the end of the movie, maximus says this to the emperor
Maximus: death smiles at us all. All a man can do is smile back.
wah seh man..power betul! Talk about having big balls. Anyway, the point of me writing all this is to show u guys that paying attention to the lines in a movie is really important in appreciating it..so go watch the movie! its worth it..it didnt win academy awards for nothing you know..
sections of the gladiator script was taken from http://www.script-o-rama.com/. Shout out to the author(cant find the name sorry.) who painstakingly put it together by manual verbal listening of the movie and of course 2 thumbs up to the actual authors of the script.
